Possibilities in Art Studies
Project + research range: Oct. 2022 - Dec. 2022
UX/IxD research project involving artists desiring to be self-taught, but finding traditional forms of artistic education limiting or ineffective.
This is an extremely early research project that helped fuel my love for research, and thus it is the most primitive project in this portfolio so far.
Research performed by: Luke Iannone

● Out of those methods, which method works the best?
● Is there a desirable alternative method?

Problem Statement
Traditional learning methods limit artists, however, there might be an alternative, but the traditional methods being the standard, they arenʼt really questioned.
Recruitment Strategy
A survey was sent out in the following ways:
● Direct messages on Instagram/Discord
● Posts on Reddit
● Posts in Discord channels
○ Recruitment note:
■ This survey is aimed towards beginner artists to discover what method of learning art is most
commonly used, and the pros and cons of said methods, as well as whether or not artists
desire a new alternative to learning art that molds itself to the student to better help them
improve in their art. The survey is conducted by Luke Iannone, an Interaction Design student
at Farmingdale State College. Ths survey should take no more that 10 minutes to complete.
Your input is greatly appreciated and necessary for the completion of the study. If you are

sent to Luke Iannone and will be kept confidential. If you gave any questions, do not hesitate
to contact via email at
Survey Results
From the survey results, I learned that 40% of artists are self-taught, 80% or artists prefer to be alone, they find that instructors lack personalised artistic aid for artists, artists actually want instructors to help them more accurately, and 80% wanted personalized learning methods. (20% werenʼt sure)
Summarized:
● Self-teaching is prevalent ● Artists want to work alone ● Most artists desire personal teaching tailored to their personal needs
Implications
From the data collected from the survey, the following was implied:
Traditional art methods are effective to a limited extent
Self-teaching can be a major help to most artists.
Instructors must work with studentsʼ artistic issues more closely than before
Conclusion/Proposed Future Work
● Traditional methods of learning how to make art are more effective than initially thought.
● Most artists desire more personalized teaching methods to help them improve their skills.
● Future research methods can be performed for a more accurate result.
● An experiment involving more participants in a real location could be performed
to find more conclusive results.
