Long Island Bus
Website Redesign
Project range: January 2023 - Mid February 2023

IxD Design project focused on the redesign of the Long Island Bus website. The site itself is extremely primitive and lacks human-centered designs that allow for easy bus scheduling/tracking, making the user experience flawed.

Original Website
The Problem at Hand
These screenshots of the site are unmodified. The site appears as if it has not been updated in 15+ years. Furthermore, it is confusing at a first glance, and some links for certain busses and routes lead to dead pages, making them useless. It is also hard to find a route to your destination.

With the problems found, the research began.
Research
We spoke with a couple of bus users and there was a common complaint of having to use too many different web and mobile applications to ensure a trip’s success.
The comment sections on the bus schedule page are all negative and confused bus users looking for answers.
There are countless complaints about the bus system in Suffolk County and NICE (Nassau Inter-County Express) on the r/LongIsland subReddit. The following text shows these comments.
Research
Zpoon - Suffolk county has to join Google's Transit Partner Program to add bus routes to Google Maps.
Given that Suffolk's public transit website is still offline months after the hack and they only cobbled together a basic page recently when before there was literally no info on schedules except through wayback machine, I don't have much faith in someone there doing what needs to be done.
Bobak186 - Bc not even Google can make sense of Nassau's bus system.

Starbuckz8 - According to archive
“You can now track your Suffolk County Transit bus live and get accurate arrival
predictions on your mobile phone. Save your favorite stops and routes and set
custom alerts. Receive important system-wide announcements about Suffolk
County Transit service. Download the free TransLoc app today”
TransLoc is still available in the Google play store.
Edit: I installed it to give it a shot. It does load routes with each stop dotted, but couldn't figure out schedules. It displayed the busses, but as they weren't moving, I assumed that's not working. Or could be because all the routes are 30 miles away.

Initial UI Concepts
We decided to design redesign the website with similar characteristics/design choices to bus map/scheduling apps. The images you see here were used as reference images. To the right is a small whiteboard sketch with other ideas.
Final Website
The final site shown on the following slides is basic and mostly lacks functions but shows what the final redesigned site could look like.
You can access the site itself here.
